James P. Moran Has The Most Pro-National Right To Life Committee Voting Record Of Any Local Democratic Congressman
His Enablers Posted by Jonathan S. Mark on Saturday, February 28, 2004

The Six Times That Moran Voted For NRLC-Backed Anti-Choice/Pro-Life Legislation Is Greater Than The Total For The Other Five Local Democratic Congressmen Combined

The National Right To Life Committee's Online Legislative Scorecard Shows That James P. Moran, Jr. "Voted For Us" Six Times Since 1997.

Moran's six votes for NRLC-backed anti-choice/pro-life legislation since 1997 are as follows:

  • Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act (7/24/02): Moran was one of 65 Democrats to support this legislation. 141 Democrats opposed it.
  • Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act (4/5/2000): Moran was one of 77 Democrats to support this bill. 132 opposed it.
  • Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act Veto Override (7/23/98): Moran voted with the Republican majority to override the then-embattled President Clinton's veto of this anti-choice legislation. Party breakdowns for this vote are not available.
  • Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act(10/8/97): Moran, who has been persistent in opposing partial-birth abortions except for a single vote this year, voted with the Republican majority to ban the procedure, which passed by a margin of 296-132.
  • Assisted Suicide Funding Restriction (4/10/97): A piece of meaningless piffle that passed the House by a wide margin. Moran gets a pass for his pro-NRLC vote on this one.
  • Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act (3/20/97): In this vote the former stockbroker James P. Moran, Jr. pretended to be a doctor as he voted to ban what the bill defined as "an abortion in which the person performing the abortion partially vaginally delivers a living fetus before killing the fetus and completing the delivery."This legislation passed 295-136.

Strangely, "Dr." Jim Moran apparently did not object to removing a malformed fetus via a c-section, which happens every day in this country in cases of birth defects which would otherwise produce a dying fetus incapable of survival. "Dr." Moran's distinction between a vaginal delivery and a caesarean section is inexplicable. The end result is identical regardless of the means of delivery, yet "Dr." Moran voted to ban the procedure in one case and permit it in the other.

By contrast, Congressmen Al Wynn and Steny Hoyer of Prince George's County each voted for NRLC-backed legislation only one time. Suburban Maryland congressmen Elijah Cummings, Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin never voted for a single piece of NRLC-backed legislation.

Grand Totals:

Number of times since 1997 that James P. Moran, Jr. voted for legislation backed by the National Right To Life Committee: 6

Number of times since 1997 that local Democratic congressmen Cardin, Cummings, Hoyer, Van Hollen and Wynn combined voted for legislation backed by the National Right To Life Committee: 2
