A Call To The NARAL Political Department Shows That NARAL Has Not Supported Moran In The Past 10 Years, If They Ever Did At a President's Day candidates forum on Feb. 16, 2004 in Alexandria, James Moran's Democratic primary challenger Andy Rosenberg pointed out that in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2000, Congressman Jim Moran voted to outlaw certain late term abortion procedures referred to as "partial birth abortions." Moran even voted to override vetoes by President Bill Clinton. Moran responded by claiming that "NARAL has supported me." Anyone who wishes to determine the validity of Moran's claim of the National Abortion Rights Action League's support can do so by calling up NARALs political department at 202-973-3000. Their spokespeople will be very happy to set the record straight with respect to Moran's claim of NARAL support. NARAL told me the following:
Therefore, what Moran's claim that "NARAL has supported me" reduces to is that there exists a remote possibility that prior to 1995 (i.e., ten years ago) NARAL may perhaps have supported Moran. Maybe. No one can know for sure, since NARALs records do not extend back that far. Let us assume, for purposes of argument, that at some point prior to 1995 NARAL may have supported Moran. Is it honest for James P. Moran, Jr. to respond to criticisms of his anti-choice votes from 1995 to the present by claiming that "NARAL has supported me"? The evidence suggests that at no time during the period when Moran was voting to limit choice did NARAL ever support James P. Moran, Jr. Nor do they support him now. < | >
