Democrats Decide To Support A June 8 Primary
General Discussion Posted by Jonathan S. Mark on Wednesday, February 18, 2004

Now It's Time For All Of Us To Take The Plunge And Join A Political Party

The AndyRosenbergForCongress.com website states:
    "Campaign Manager Update...

Unanimous Vote Confirms June 8th Primary

Last night, the Eighth Congressional District Democratic Committee voted unanimously to support an open primary to be held on June 8, 2004 in Virginia's 8th Congressional District. I commend the Committee and, in particular, Margo Horner (Chair) for ensuring that Democrats in Northern Virginia have an opportunity to fully participate in the nomination process."

Recently an Arab-American group sponsored a forum for its members on how to get their voices heard. A speaker presented a number of rules for effective political activism. One of them was to join a political party.

That sounds like good advice, but many of us who usually vote Democratic have been neglecting to follow it. Andy's article includes a link to the Eighth Congressional District Democratic Committee, which has a page listing the URLs of the Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County and Falls Church Democratic Committees.

Click on one of these (e.g., Fairfax County) and you will go to a page that contains links on how to join the Democratic Committee in your area.

The process for joining in Fairfax county is as follows:

    "Membership is a three-step process.

Contact your District Chair. You may be asked to attend District Committee meetings and get to know members in your area.

You may apply Ready to apply? Download the membership application for membership if there are openings on your District Committee. The District Committee Members vote on your application.

Applicants who are approved by the District Committee are voted on by the full FCDC membership. When you are approved by the FCDC membership, congratulations! You will then be a voting member of FCDC."

By not participating in the Democratic Party, I and other Democratic voters have inadvertently been allowing Moran supporters to participate in our places. It's time to change that. The local Democratic Party did the right thing this time and voted to hold a primary, but joining them (if you are a Democrat) is a way to make certain that they do the right thing in the future.
