Late-Breaking Campaign-Fundraising Information Concerning The Moran-Rosenberg Race
General Discussion Posted by Jonathan Mark on Thursday, February 12, 2004

Andy Rosenberg Has Now Raised $250K, Up $110K Since His Previous FEC Filing

Campaign fundraising is unfortunately a part of politics. Not even a maverick like Dennis Kucinich can run for office without raising money. Campaign ads must be purchased, professional staff must be paid, the rent on the office is due each month, and so on.

In the past, Moran has gotten a free ride. His opponent in the 2002 general election, Scott Tate, raised $89K (none of it from PACs) compared to Moran's $1.1 million (44 percent of which was from PACs.)

But now Jim Moran is facing a Democratic primary challenger named Andy Rosenberg who is able to leverage his professional (he is a lawyer with a major firm downtown) and community credentials in order to be competitive with Moran. And because Moran wastes huge amounts of money on expensive consultants like, in the past, Joe Trippi (Trippi's firm just got done charging the Dean campaign $700K for Trippi's ad-purchasing services.) Andy may effectively have more money to spend than Moran.

Moran is facing his first real campaign since he beat incumbent Stan Parris in 1990.

As of the last FEC filing (on 12-31-03) Andy Rosenberg has raised about $250,000 (not $140,000 as I reported). FEC reports show that he has $150,000 in the bank to Moran's $318,000 as of the last filing date. But of that, Moran cannot legally spend it all since some is designated for the general.

Andy has now raised a few thousand in PAC money, compared to Moran's $180,000. PAC money make up less than three percent of Andy's contributions and 27 percent of Moran's.

Andy has donated $23K of his own money to his own campaign, Moran none. Indeed, in years gone by Moran has used campaign funds for his personal benefit. He sold his car (or perhaps it was repossessed due to Moran's compulsive gambling debts, cf. "Day Trader Congressman James Moran: Corrupt or Stupid?") The vehicle over which the then 54-year-old Moran got into a fight with an eight-year-old in 2000 was subsidized by his campaign. Moran was using it to drop off one of his children at a community center, having no personal vehicle of his own.

Finally, Moran has spent $376K so far, and Andy has spent $97K. It is anyone's guess what on earth Moran has done with his $376K. Moran has broadcast no campaign ads and does not conduct door-to-door canvassing.
